Protests

Why Protest?

We cannot live in peace with each other while there are still

weapons of mass destruction being manufactured, stored and used

in the world. Hence the protest movement, in which people come

together to demonstrate outside weapons establishments etc and draw

the media's attention to what is going on. Protests also take place

against abuses of people's human rights, such as at Campsfield (more on this later).

Following are some of the principle protests in this country at the moment.

Faslane Peace Camp

Faslane Peace Camp is situated across the road from the Faslane naval base

where nuclear submarines come to be fitted out. The camp has been in existence

since 1982 and the resident protesters and visiting supporters stage regular

protests at the base. There are often arrests. The camp itself is based on council

land and there is the constant threat of eviction.

Campsfield

Outside Campsfield House near Oxford there is a recently established protest camp

bringing attention to the plight of the political refugees being held there. They have

fled from countries like Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana and Turkey and are being held without

charge in what is virtually a prison run by Group 4. There are regular protests held

and more information can be obtained from the website:
